Here is a lengthy article about some of what happened behind the scenes at a New Orleans Hospital in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. It focuses on many issues including ethics -- who should be evacuated, in what order, and left behind in light of the limited time and resources available to the hospital staff. It is heartwrenching. One thing that struck me was that with all of the other things that went wrong (FEMA, communications not working properly, and many other things), that the medical people did the best they could under very trying and stressful conditions.
This is a heart wrenching story and emphasizes how no one should ever be in a position of having to make life and decisions like this.
