This is the sort of stuff that sets people loose and math drives them crazy. This is the analemma. Basically it is pictures of the sun at the same time every day for a year, if I understand it correctly. Also worth noting, that is the symbol for infinity. Who knows maybe that is where the symbol came from, I didn't read into it too much. I just thought you might like it.
